Age Concern: Career Advice

By Bob Gerberg

Some may use their age as an excuse for not commencing a full-fledged professional job search. Their confidence may be on the wane, and they may not want to admit it, but despite their experience, they don't really know how to search at their level bearing today's career market and advancements in technology. Dealing with perceptions about age is much like any other task. You make progress if you do take action.

Most people come to understand their marketability can be dramatically enhanced through communication of all the skills, know-how and personal strengths they possess to eliminate any self- imposed barriers. If they can contribute, age is irrelevant. People tend to forget: Employers think about themselves, their problems to be solved and their own challenges to be conquered.

Now, there is no question that age will eliminate people from many opportunities. That is why, for them, aggressiveness is a valued feature of a job/career advisor.

Specialists can identify virtually all the credible industry hooks they possess —broadening the functions they can fill, as well as the industries they can target with confidence. As you might expect, having superior materials is essential.

Many clients seek out career advisors because they have doubts about competing for a desirable job. Their age may be a barrier for the responsibility their pride and ego commands. Regrettably, if they believe age is the barrier, and remain unhappily employed elsewhere, this mental obstacle effectively blocks their putting forth the required energy to make the right move.

Then, today's technology enables their credentials to be put into play for a significant portion of all suitable openings during the time they are searching. Campaigning more aggressively is a key to offsetting barriers having to do with age. Campaigning in the less competitive unpublished market is also essential.

And, just as it is true that age will eliminate some options, it is also true that, in some instances, young management teams look for proven senior or veteran talent to add balance and a sense of maturity. It isn't easy, but for those willing to change their beliefs and take advantage of the marketing and technology available today, age is not the barrier it once might have been.
